The media is ripe with statistics detailing the vast numbers of Baby Boomers that are aging, but less focus has been given to the implications of this silver tsunami on local communities. Many communities will face both opportunities and challenges to accommodate the rapid growth of older adults ‘aging in place.’ Is our community prepared to provide what the older individual desires or needs to remain independent, and to live in the setting of his or her choice? This presentation will address the support services required by older adults to remain safely in their homes, outline the characteristics of an elder friendly community, and share examples of promising community strategies.
